"Here are my time-tested tips for not forgetting stuff at the x-ray machines. I always follow this exact procedure:
1) Put watch and cell phone in briefcase. 2) Undo shoe laces while waiting in line.
3) Once at x-ray table, grab two grey bins: Tray 1=laptop, Tray 2= shoes, jacket, toletries. I always put stuff in the x-ray in this order: Briefcase, then Tray 1, Tray 2. Since doing this, I haven't left anything behind in security."
